Not that any of that made a modicum of difference to the press, nor indeed to the public. The newspapers, of course, had a very good motive for keeping the Ripper scare alive. The Ripper sold newspapers. And so, there was widespread reportage of the murder, which all but stated that the Ripper was back. The lack of mutilation to the corpse was explained away by the assertion that Jack had probably been disturbed at his work.

As for the public, it had been five weeks since the Mary Kelly murder and the rumor mill needed feeding. It wasn’t long before people were talking again in whispered tones about the Whitechapel fiend. It was almost as though they’d missed him.
